CHIDEFEA AND 2 other CBOS BENEFIT FROM THE TUL RELIEF AID

In April 2021, Uganda experienced a second wave of covid19 which claimed lives of very many people. It started mildly between April and May. However, in June it spread terribly, and the number of deaths surged tremendously with in a very short period. This resulted into the total lock down in the country.

Due to the total lock down, most of the business sectors in Uganda were negatively affected. The victims included our CHIDEFEA women who had just been helped by Mirembe Foundation to rejuvenate their business after the first wave of COVID 19 in 2020 which left all their businesses down.

Earlier on, when the women had started their businesses afresh, they had resolved that in order to be able to help themselves in case of another eventuality, every woman was entitled to save Uganda Shillings 2,000 (two thousand) per month to cater for that cause.

During this second wave coupled with a second total lock down, the CHIDEFEA leaders did not wait for the women to use up all their business capital like they did in the first covid19 wave in 2020. The leaders convened a meeting to find a solution which would save the new businesses for the women during this period. However, the women had only saved Uganda Shillings 90,000 as a reserve for such natural disasters. This is because the women had just saved for one month as per their agreement. This amount of money could not even be enough for one person.

With the help of Tusaidiane Uganda, CHIDEFEA solicited some funds to help curb the situation. CHIDEFEA received Uganda Shillings 11,850,000 ( eleven million eight hundred fifty thousand) from Mirembe Foundation and Tusaidiane Uganda.

This money helped a lot to save the women’s businesses and the situation at large. They received food items which included maize flour (posho), rice, sugar, beans, cooking oil and salt. The also got detergents like soap and sanitizers and they received mosquito nets and cash money.

The women are looking forward to continuing working for self-sufficiency and self-reliance.

Additionally, two more TUL partner organisations benefited from the 2021 TUL Relief Aid viz SEECHILD in Bunamwaya and Mama and Me  in Jinja. Please see pictures below:

HOPE AND RELIEF FOR THE CHIDEFEA WOMEN ALONG THE SHORES OF LAKE VICTORIA Amidst LOCK-DOWN

Before Covid-19, the women of CHIDEFEA women group were doing great not anticipating anything. Little did they know that the situation could suddenly CHANGE, last long, taking away with it what they had achieved. “The corona virus pandemic inevitably resulted in many negative and long term impacts” for these women.

The women were on lock-down since March. They were not working and had nothing to feed their families. They did not anticipate that the lock-down would last long to reach an extent of utilizing their business capital to feed their families.

They also experienced floods dispersing their businesses and homes and leading  to diseases, hunger and starvation.

They were hopeless; their small businesses were gone and Micro credit funds exhausted. This led to the intervention of Tusaidiane Uganda and CHIDEFEA women group leaders to appeal to Stichting Mirembe for support to the women.

Stichting Mirembe agreed to offer relief support to the 45 CHIDEFEA women. So far, 23 women have been supported with food including maize flour, beans, sugar, soap, cooking oil, masks and cash money worth UGX 200.000 to support the women and their families during this crisis.

The women were overwhelmed with the support given to them by Stichting Mirembe and CHIDEFEA. They said that they had never seen a MCF women group that supports women in time of need and sorrow.  To them they were indeed one family. Most of them were seen kneeling to thank the donors for their support during this hard and difficult time.

CHIDEFEA women group would like to extend their sincere gratitude to Stichting Mirembe and Tusaidiane Uganda Limited for the financial and emotional support towards their group enabling them to give a helping hand to the women members.
